WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE UNDER A CYBER ATTACK

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE UNDER A CYBER ATTACK

It is no longer a mystery that cyber attacks are a concrete and constant threat.

And it is not certain that large companies or institutions are more protected or safer.

The attack suffered by the Lazio Region last summer is clear proof of how destructive (and embarrassing!) a Ransomware can be.

Trenitalia, for example, recently suffered a cyber attack that paralyzed the Italian automatic ticket machines.

Cyber attacks of this kind are by no means rare and can have significant impacts: from the interruption of company services and activities, to economic losses up to reputational risks.

In addition to the correct preventive actions, it is clear that in the event of attacks it is necessary to put in place rapid and effective measures to properly manage the emergency.
So what are the main actions to be taken when undergoing a cyber attack?
  1. Implement the Disaster & Recovery Plan
  2. Each company should prepare and share a Disaster & Recovery Plan with staff.

This plan includes all the useful information and actions to be implemented in the event of accidents, emergencies and cyber attacks, with the correct priorities.

Among this information, the following must not be missing:
    • the reference of the systems manager
    • instructions for restoring data from backup
    • how to contact and what information must be provided to the authorities (including the Privacy Guarantor if necessary) and to all the victims involved (customers, employees, suppliers).
Not having a Disaster & Recovery Plan (or having an inadequate one) can be a big risk to waste precious time during an emergency, or even making mistakes.

It is therefore important not only to verify that the Plan is present, but also to evaluate it regularly so that it is updated, effective and timely.
  3. Understanding what happened (and fixing the problem)
  4. It is often mistakenly thought that, in the event of an attack, it is enough to restore the systems or regain possession of the data involved to solve the situation.

While these are certainly priorities, it may not be enough.

In fact, it is necessary to understand how the criminals were able to violate the systems and which security measures were not shown to be adequate.

Problems must be recognized and resolved to prevent future attacks.

SIAE knows something about it, since recently hit by the same ransomware and the same criminal group that violated them last year.

If the IT department of the company is not able to solve the mystery, a good rule is to contact Cyber Security specialists who will provide the necessary assessments and will also be able to find further vulnerabilities that could put the company in risk in the future.
  5. Do not be ashamed of the cyber attack (and communicate it correctly)
  6. Cyber attacks must now be considered a norm.

If you have not already been attacked, you will be in the future (and there is always the possibility that the attack took place without being discovered).

In particular, for large companies, institutions and critical services, it should be normal to expect problems of this type and prepare to manage the emergency.

But even small businesses can fall victim to attacks, albeit less targeted.

A cyber attack, therefore, is not something to be ashamed of, but an eventuality to be managed.

It must therefore be communicated in the correct way (not denied!), reported to authorities with timely information and all victims involved must be notified.

Incorrect communication of the incident can be harmful in terms of loss of reputation and image.

Paradoxically, however, a cyber attack managed and resolved correctly can become a virtuous example to show to customers.
In the event of cyber attacks, therefore, resolving the emergency is certainly a priority, but it is not enough: the risks of further violations or reputational ones should not be forgotten.

The post-attack analyzes, to ensure that vulnerabilities that led to the incident have been mitigated, and the correct communication of the incident should be considered additional priorities to be managed, like data recovery.

Good job!

THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF THE CISO

news

THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF THE CISO

I recently had the honor to participate at the Open Lesson of the Executive Master in Cybersecurity and Data Protection organized by 24ORE Business School, where we discussed about the role of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

In a scenario where cyber attacks and cyber threats are constantly lurking, it is imperative that companies are prepared to manage and mitigate these risks in accordance with budget needs and business objectives.

The role of the CISO fits into this context since is responsible for setting and managing the corporate Cyber Security posture.

CISO’s tasks include the definition of long and short-term strategies, best practices, the verification and implementation of processes to mitigate the risks of cyber space, the spread of the cyber security culture in the company.

The role of the CISO is as strategic as it is still not very widespread and is only now starting to get the attention it deserves.

However, it is very important that it respects some characteristics:

  1. THE CISO IS NOT A TECHNICIAN

Although often confused with a technical figure, the CISO cannot limit itself only to this aspect.

While understanding the dynamics and complexity of the cyber world, this role must in fact be played mainly by a manager, able to understand company needs and communicate with management at the same level.

A sort of hybrid figure able to connect and understand both worlds, the technical one and the business one, to find the most suitable solutions to guarantee the protection and availability of data and corporate assets.

  2. THE CISO MUST REPORT TO THE BOARD

For this role to be effective, however, its placement in the organization chart must be correct.

In fact, when present, the CISO is often employed by other C-level figures such as the CIO (Chief Information Officer) or the CTO (Chief Technology Officer).

This depends on the fact that Cyber Security is still seen as a sub-set of the IT world, but it should be emphasized that this conception is wrong and limiting.

In fact, the purpose of Cyber Security cannot be limited only to the protection of computer data, but is rather to protect all important assets for companies, institutions and citizens.

In the case of networked medical devices and electric cars, for example, these assets also include human lives.

It is therefore important to evaluate Cyber Security as a subject in itself and to ensure that the CISO can report directly to the company Board to maintain the autonomy and decision-making power it needs to operate.

  3. THE CISO MAY BE AVAILABLE IN “AS A SERVICE” MODE

The figure of the CISO would be useful in any company.

It is easier to find this role in large companies, but in small and medium-sized companies things get complicated.

Often SMEs do not have enough funds to hire a CISO and in these cases it would be useful to be able to use a “CISO As a Service” service, being able to “rent” this professionalism as needed, optimizing costs and thus making the function accessible. even to smaller companies.

Although this service would make it possible to spread the figure of the CISO even for companies that cannot afford it, on the other hand, since it is a figure outside the company, there could be a lot of resistance to placing it correctly in the organization chart, going to interfere with correct operation. of this role.
Ultimately, CISO must devise and manage Cyber Security strategies in compliance with the corporate budget, in order to spend it effectively and efficiently.

In a scenario where resources tend to be scarce in the face of ever-increasing threats, it is in fact a priority to correctly manage budgets in order not to obtain greater damage.

Knowing the threats for the specific sector and risk model of the company is certainly an excellent tool in this sense, which allows you to target strategies and defenses more precisely. The scenario of cyber threats changes continuously and very rapidly, so it is very important to obtain timely and detailed information about it.

Hackmanac can be useful for this purpose, ask us how!

HOW AN ASSESSMENT OF IT SYSTEMS CAN PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS

HOW AN ASSESSMENT OF IT SYSTEMS CAN PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS

After having seen which assessments should be performed periodically on IT systems to identify the problems exploited by cyber criminals, let’s see instead how one of these checks allowed a company to save itself from a series of threats it did not know.

Our customer, with over 100 locations and stores around the world, had reports on their systems vulnerabilities.

In a company of this size, however, there are countless systems that could be affected by problems, not only servers, but also employees’ PCs, mobile devices, network devices, printers, etc.

It is not easy, therefore, in the presence of such a complex and constantly evolving architecture, to be able to highlight the critical issues.

Our task every year was to carefully analyze the last report, identify the most serious vulnerabilities and, subsequently, carry out a Penetration Test on these, or a verification of how they could have been actively exploited by a cyber criminal to violate the company’s systems.

We also added some extra assessments such as verifying the company’s Social profiles, a phishing or Social Engineering test.

Certainly, a complex and ambitious project, carried out regularly starting 10 years ago, when such activities were not widespread at all, but which allowed the company to avoid various problems, to implement new countermeasures and to verify thir improvements over time.

So much work, but also great satisfaction.

For example, when we checked Social profiles, we came across a fake customer care from the company offering customer support.

The criminals intercepted the comments of customers who needed support directly from the official company page, then diverted them to a fake profile.

In addition to the damage to customers, the situation presented clear risks to the brand’s online reputation.

Our prompt identification of the problem has certainly averted the worst scenario.

On another occasion, we identified instead a malicious websites that, using domains similar to our customer’s one, were selling counterfeit products.

With a thorough research we were able to find several sites of this type, one of which, of Chinese origin, was selling fake products from the new collection.

The customer had developed the design months before, but the collection, intended for sale only later, had not yet completed the production phase.

The Chinese fake site, on the other hand, was already selling the products well in advance, a clear indicator that the company’s servers had been hacked to steal the collection design.

Thanks to our business, the customer has therefore obtained two advantages.

  • First, he was able to file a complaint with the relevant authorities, making sure that the malicious site was closed.
  • It also carried out a thorough investigation of its systems to assess how and when the attack occurred.

With this information it was possible to reassess the company’s cyber defenses, updating them in light of the violation suffered.

Ultimately, systems assessments allow companies to uncover issues that could be exploited maliciously.

But it is also often possible to identify indicators of cyber attacks that have already occurred, mitigating their effects and preventing further damage.

Definitely a major benefit!
